The distributive and the commutative properties are very useful they can make your problems much easear the commutative property states that the order in which an operation is putted does not matter in a problem but this only works for additions and multiplications they do not work for substractions and divisions becuase if you apply the commutative property in any of these last two operations you will get a wrong answer
Examples:
addition
3+2=5
and
2+3=5 they both get you to the same answer
multiplication
5*8=40
and
8*5=40 they both get you to the same answer
substraction
8-4=4
and
4-8=-4 they do not get you the same answer
division
2/1=2
and
1/2=1 half they do not get you the same answer
The distributive property only works for division and multiplication this states that you can divide or multiply any number separately if you have a group of numbers inside a paranthesis and one outside, you can also change from factored to expanded form or the other way around.
examples:
multiplication
5 (8+5-6)
you can do this
(5*8)+(5*5)-(5*6)
40+25-30
75-30=45
division
(8+10+4+2)/2
you can do this
4+5+2+1
9+3=12
