SOLVING EQUATIONS

In this unit called "Making Sense Of Symbols" solving equations, is a major subject. Equations are probably one of the most important and useful things in math, you use this for making graphs, you can get the slope, the y-intercept, of course a coordinate with and x and a y value (x,y) each value has an equavalent or respective y value.

the basic form of an equation is y=mx+b. in this equation y stands for the y value of the coordiante b stands for the slope x stands for the x value of the coordinate and finally the b stands for the y-intercept.

to get the slope:
first you choose to points from the graph in this case (3,2) and (5,4)
so the formula is (y2-y1) /(x2-x1)
so (4-2) /(5-3)
then 2/2=1
so the slope is 1

to get the y-intercept:
you take one of the coordinates and you put them in the equation with the slope
4=5(1)+b
4=5+b
4=5+-1
so the y-intercept would be -1

to do a graph:
you can do a table of values by ploting many x-values into the equation and making a line with all those values that you get, or you can start from the y-intercept that you get and then calculate the slope with rise over run.
